Bacteriocin: Zoocin A
Accession: BAC198
Classification
Class: Unclassified
Genetics
Gene: zooA
Producer and target organisms
Producer Organism: Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus [Gram-positive]
Taxonomy: Bacteria
Firmicutes
Lactobacillales
Streptococcaceae
Streptococcus
Target organismsGram-positive: Streptococcus pyogenes (4/4) - Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (1/1) -
NOTE:not active against Micrococcus luteus - Streptococcus anginosus - Streptococcus uberis - Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis
Description
SEQUENCE: zoocin A is translated as a 285-aa precursor protein and released into the environment by proteolytic cleavage of a 23-aa leader sequence to yield the functional protein of 262 aa.
MODE OF ACTION:
Zoocin A had weak β-lactamase activity, bound radioactive penicillin covalently, and its streptococcolytic activity was inhibited by penicillin. Thus, zoocin A is a penicillin-binding protein and presumably is a D-alanyl endopeptidase.
