elgA gene encodes the prepeptide of the elgicins, with a length of 64 amino acids. The origin of elgicins from identical pre-peptides by peptide cleavage and the removal of one amino acid from each corresponding N-terminus. ElgA is cleaved at four sites A20-N21, N21-L22, L22-G23, and G23-N24, resulting in the production of elgicin C, B, AII, and AI, respectively.
